July 30: Althea Gibson Documentary Film Preview
Movie Night at Motorco Music Hall
Beat the heat this summer with the Ivy+ consortium at Motorco with a sneak peek at an exciting new documentary, ALTHEA, from Durham filmmaker Rex Miller.
ALTHEA (83 minutes)
Synopsis: Althea Gibson was a truant from the rough streets of Harlem who emerged as a most unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950's. Her life and achievements transcend sports. Her roots as a sharecropper’s daughter, her family’s migration north to Harlem in the 30!s, her mentoring from Sugar Ray Robinson, David Dinkins, her fame that thrust her unwillingly into the glare of the early Civil Rights movement, all bring the story into a much broader realm of African-American History.
Sponsors: Movie nights at Motorco represent a partnership between Motorco Music Hall, the Southern Documentary Fund, and the Ivy+ consortium. To make this sustainable for each partner we charge a modest entry fee ($5/person) to offset Motorco's room fee and we pass the hat during the program to support the work of the Southern Documentary Fund which makes these films available without direct charge for viewing. We thank the filmmaker Rex Miller, Motorco Music Hall, and the Southern Documentary Fund for making these evenings possible.
