Postponed: Bob Whyte, HBS '65: The Story of Tin Pan Alley
We regret that we must postpone Bob Whyte, HBS '65: The Story of Tin Pan Alley.
Due to event scheduling challenges leading to low enrollment, we regret that we will postpone Bob Whyte's "THE STORY OF TIN PAN ALLEY." All refunds have been handled by CDS.
Bob Whyte is a terrific leader for the HCRT, a gifted showman, and a passionate historian. We look forward to this program's rescheduling.
=================
Bob Whyte, past President and Program Chair of our club, will present “THE STORY OF TIN PAN ALLEY”, at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies on two Saturday afternoons, September 29th, and October 6th, from 1-3pm. With a mix of storytelling and music, both live(Bob’s banjo and vocals) and on the screen (audio/video clips of songs and movies), Bob will tell the amazing story of how Tin Pan Alley gave birth to the American Popular Song industry. You won’t want to miss this unique combination of education and entertainment.
For the past 50 years, Bob has entertained audiences as a banjo player, jazz singer, and funny guy, with a special love for jazz novelty tunes and songs, with a spark, that sprang from the loins of Tin Pan Alley during the first half of the 20th century.
But his curiosity drove him to research what Tin Pan Alley was all about, resulting in a course he has been teaching for the past 3 years as part of Duke’s continuing education programs.
The two 2-hour classes at CDS will focus on the entrepreneurial beginnings of the Alley in the Gay Nineties, the emergence of ragtime, blues, and jazz in the first two decades of the 20th century, the Roaring Twenties, and the critical role played by African Americans in the creation of this uniquely American product…American Popular Song.
UPDATE: And, as an added attraction, Bob will have Laura Jones, his favorite diva, be on hand to do her own renditions of Tin Pan Alley torch songs and ballads. Bob and Laura last performed for the Harvard club in 2006, when they shared vocals in Bob’s musical comedy show. “Southern Songs By Yankees?”
GREAT DEAL: As a special incentive to not wait until the last minute to sign up, people who register before September 15th, will pay only $50, rather than the course’s $85 standard fee.
