JAZZ LOFT PROJECT EXHIBITION AT THE NASHER
Special Hosted Showing for Harvard Club Members and Guests - Featuring Jazz Loft Project Creator Sam Stephenson
Reservations Required, Must Purchase in Advance, Deadline Has Been Extended to 6:00 pm, Sunday, May 8
In 1998, Sam Stephenson, a Duke writer and photographer, was conducting research at the University of Arizona when he made a wonderful discovery. Stephenson was amazed to find an immense collection of photographs and recordings created by the famous Life Magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith. This treasure trove of 40,000 photographs and 4,000 hours of audio recordings documented the nocturnal jazz scene and street life in the wholesale flower district of Manhattan between 1957 and 1965.
Imagine! Thelonious Monk, Zoot Simms, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins and countless others jamming and hanging out at the Loft, captured authentically and intimately.
For Stephenson, that discovery kicked off the extraordinary decade-long Jazz Loft Project, resulting in the production of a beautifully illustrated book of Jazz Loft stories, photos and sounds; a radio series; a website; and a traveling exhibition. This Jazz Loft Project Exhibition is currently housed at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University (after previous showings at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and the Chicago Cultural Center).
Now for the best part: On Thursday, May 12, Harvard Club members and guests are invited to a special HCRT-sponsored event at the Nasher. During this exclusive event, Sam Stephenson himself will personally talk about the challenges and triumphs of bringing the Jazz Loft project to fruition. Sam will tell us what to look for as we walk through the exhibit and experience the images and sounds of the jazz legends portrayed in their natural habitat by W. Eugene Smith.
Further details about the exhibit are available at the Nasher Museum website and the Jazz Loft Project website.
